Native Artifacts
The Society’s Native Artifacts collection is comprised of a large collection of Native American materials including arrowheads and tools. Most of the collection centers on the Lenni Lenape people who inhabited the area. The tribe is still active today.
Ceremonial Bow
This particular bow was painted red and black which was an important color combination in tribal culture symbolizing the meditating quality between life and death, night and day, and men and women. Traces of the colors are still visible today. This object is currently on display in our Native American Exhibit: The First Inhabitants: The Lenape and their Predecessors
Turtle Token
This rare turtle token is made of Jasper. Turtles figured prominently in tribal culture as well as being a resource for food and materials. According to tribal history, the earth was first on the back of a tortoise and as it raised its back, the water fell off it, and a tree sprouted in the middle of this new dry earth.
