The Salem County Historical Society offers a variety of exhibits for all ages.


Field Trip
*** The Society is proud to offer “Childhood in Salem County” as part of their continuing educational programs. The 6 special exhibits/displays available for school visits are the:

“Stone Barn”
Grades: 3-5
Length 25 minutes
Take a walk through our stone barn built in 1959 of South Jersey fieldstone. Students will see carriages, a treadmill and 19th-century hearse. Students will play “History Mistory” where they will compare present technology with 19th-century equivalents.

Meets State Goals: Social Studies 6.1A, 6.4A; Language Arts 3.3A, 3.4A; Visual and Performing Arts 1.5A.
Special Restrictions: Weather permitting, would not be open during severe cold weather or snow.
“Log Cabin Education Center”
Grades: 3-5
Length 25 minutes
Sit in a 19th century log cabin interpreted as a one room school-house. This cabin was an actual dwelling which was moved to its present location from Penton-Station Road in Alloway. Students will experience a classroom of the 1850s using slates, chalk, battledores and hornbooks.

Meets State Goals: Social Studies 6.4A; Language Arts 3.1A, 3.2A, 3.3A, 3.4A; Mathematics 4.1B. Special Restrictions: Space is limited to 22 people
"Keeping Room”
Meets State Goals: Social Studies 6.1A, 6.4A; Language Arts 3.3A, 3.4A; Visual and Performing Arts 1.5A.
Special Restrictions: Space is limited.



The Keeping Room is the oldest room in the museum dating back to 1700. Learn what life was like 300 years ago. See what cooking implements were used in that time. The students will learn the art of carding wool and prepare the wool for spinning. The students will spin wool on reproduction spinning wheels.

SCHS Keeping Room
"Architectural Detective”
Grades: 3-12
Length: 25 minutes
Meets State Goals: Social Studies 6.4A, Language Arts 3.3 & 3.4; Visual and Performing Arts 1.3D, 1.5A.
Special Restrictions: Weather permitting (9n case of bad weather, students will engage in a special in-door lesson on pattern-brick architecture and log cabin construction).

salem Architecture
Students partake in an inter-active architectural walking tour down Salem’s historic Market Street. Guides lead two groups of 5-7 students while they try to locate architectural details and elements found on their “detective sheets”. During the process, they are introduced to a number of topics including: changes in building styles over time, 18th and 19th century social class systems, and local history. Seen as pieces of artistic expression, the buildings are examined by students in terms of their proportions, design, and overall character. Symbolism is explored using examples found in these Colonial, Federal and Italianate structures. Age-appropriate connections to why these symbols were important during each time period will be made. Students and teachers will leave with a whole new appreciation of streetscapes in their own communities.

Lenni Lenape in Southern New Jersey”
Grades: 3-5
Length: 25 minutes

 
The Lenni Lenape Indians inhabited this region. Sharing the Society’s extensive collection of artifacts, found locally, the students will learn the importance of the tools the Lenape used for everyday existence. The culture of the Lenni Lenape will be explored describing their hunting and gardening practices, games they played, and shelter and language. Students will grind corn as they learn its importance to the Lenape.

Meets State Goals: Social Studies 6.4B; Language Arts 3.3A, 3.3B, 3.4A; Visual & Performing Arts: 1.3D. Special Restrictions: Space is limited to 22 people

Research Library :
• Visit our library to see how the research library is used.
• Students will begin a family tree chart project.
• Overview of the care and handling of historic documents.

Teachers should consider which 3 exhibits, listed above, their group would find of interest. Keep in mind that each room/display will take approximately 20-30 minutes each.

Reservations
The school visits must be reserved through the Salem County Historical Society Education Department. School groups can be scheduled Monday through Saturday by calling (856) 935-5004 or
[ Email Us ]. Please make your reservations early. A written confirmation will be sent upon receipt of your reservation.

Adult groups who wish to tour are encouraged to make a reservation as well.

Parking
The Historical Society has nine reserved spaces behind their Barn on Center Drive. The students can enter through the gated courtyard to begin their tour from our Log Cabin Education Center.

Chaperones
We suggest one adult chaperone for every 10-12 students. Admission is $3.00 for adults and $ .25 per student. (Salem County students on a class trip are free).
Rest Rooms
Restroom facilities are very limited.

OUTREACH Traveling Trunk

Our Traveling Trunks contain authentic and reproduction artifacts, pictures, and clothing. Each trunk includes the teacher lesson plans based on the NJ State Core Curriculum Standards and several hands-on activities.

The trunks are available to the local school districts for a two week rental fee of $25.00, within the Salem County N.J.

Advanced Registration is required and may be made by contacting the Education Department via telephone at (856) 935-5004. We will add an online registration form shortly.

Distance Learning

The Salem County Historical Society's distance learning program enables students to learn more about our collections without leaving their classroom. Through live interaction with our volunteer docents, students and teachers can experience some of the same exhibits available during an on-site field trip. The technology allows the museum to share with others around the world, the fine examples of South Jersey History. The programs have been designed with the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards oin mind.

Distance Learning programs are offered on a regular basis during the school season (October 1 through April 30) and by appointment.

Advance registrations are required and must be in writing, no phone reservations will be accepted. Information on programs,
Registration forms, program fees, and specific scheduling questions may be obtained via telephone at (856) 935-5004. All program reservations must be made 3 Weeks in advance.

There are two forms of registering for programs that have been provided by the web site. A printable form may be filled out and mailed in, or you may submit the program request using the online form.

  • ONLINE FORM a new window will open that can be filled out and submitted directly to the Society.
  • PRINTABLE FORM can be printed and mailed to the Society.

The Education Departmment will contact you to confirm the schedule for your distance learning visit after receiving your registration form.

Confirmations and a curriculum packet will be sent for each program that is scheduled. An evaluation form will also be included in the curriculum packet. The program runs 30-40 minutes in length and an be offered in the morning or afternoon depending on class schedule.

Programs currently being offered are:
Colonial Life in Salem County, The Keeping Room - Explore the oldest room in the museum dating back to 1700. Featured in the room is the open hearth, spinning wheels, tape looms, and redware pottery.
